What Does a Fractional Sales Manager Cost in 2026?

By Conner Henry, Partner at STAOS · · 6 min read

A fractional sales manager costs $3,000 to $10,000 a month in 2026, depending on seniority, days per month, and whether coaching and hiring are included. STAOS engagements start at $5,000 a month with a three-month minimum. Advisory engagements at the RevOps layer run $8,000 a month.

That range is wide because the label covers very different jobs. A part-time sales coach running two sessions a month and a former VP rebuilding your entire revenue process are both marketed as fractional sales management, and they should not cost the same.

Here is what actually drives the number, and what should be in scope at each level.

What drives the price?

Four things: days per month, the seniority of the person, whether they coach reps directly or only advise you, and whether hiring and comp design are in scope. Days per month is the biggest single driver.

Market ranges. STAOS pricing starts at $5,000 a month with a three-month minimum.
Monthly feeTypical scopeDays per monthBest fit
$3,000 to $4,000Weekly pipeline review, forecast, light coaching2 to 31 to 2 reps, founder still selling
$5,000 to $6,000Full system install, weekly rhythm, rep coaching, comp input4 to 62 to 5 reps, the common agency case
$7,000 to $10,000Everything above plus hiring, territory, multi-team6 to 105 to 10 reps, or two sales motions
$8,000+ advisoryRevOps layer, systems and architecture, not day-to-dayVaries$5M to $50M, existing leader in seat

The thing that should not vary is accountability. If the fee buys you meetings rather than a number, the price is wrong at any level.

How does that compare to hiring full time?

A full-time VP of sales costs roughly $318,000 in year one at the US median base of $212,500, once employer burden at 1.3x and a 20% recruiting fee are included. A $5,000 a month fractional engagement is $60,000 for the same twelve months.

The comparison founders usually run is retainer against salary, which understates the hire by about 50%. Employer burden runs 1.25 to 1.4 times salary according to the US Small Business Administration, and contingency recruiting fees average 20% to 25% of first-year salary.

What should be included at $5,000 a month?

A documented sales process with stage exit criteria, a working weekly forecast, a weekly pipeline review, one-on-ones with each rep, live call coaching, and input on the comp plan and hiring bar. If call coaching is not included, you are buying advice.

  • The process, written down. Stages, exit criteria, and what a rep does at each one.
  • A forecast you can act on. Commit, best case, worst case, reviewed against what closed.
  • The weekly rhythm. Pipeline review and one-on-ones, run, not just designed.
  • Live call coaching. Listening to real calls and changing behavior. This is the part that gets cut from cheap engagements and it is the part that moves close rate.
  • Comp and hiring input. The comp plan is a behavior contract. Most agency plans pay for the wrong thing.
  • An exit plan. Someone internal being trained to run the rhythm.

What should make you walk away?

Three things, and they are all easy to check before you sign.

  1. No CRM access requested. If they do not want to be in your CRM, they are not going to be accountable to your pipeline. This is the single clearest signal.
  2. No end state. An engagement designed to run forever is a salary paid by invoice with none of the commitment of an employee.
  3. Deliverables measured in documents. A playbook you did not need explained is a deck. Ask what changes in the weekly rhythm, and ask who runs it after they leave.

The counter-question worth asking them: what does month twelve look like if this works, and what are you doing in it? A good answer involves them doing less.

Is it worth it?

It depends entirely on whether your constraint is structure or volume. If you have four reps, no documented process, and a founder on every deal, a $5,000 a month engagement that lifts close rate a few points pays for itself quickly, and the arithmetic is easy to run against your own average deal size.

If you have twelve reps and a working process and what you actually need is more pipeline, a fractional sales manager is the wrong purchase and a good one will tell you so. Check which problem you have with the sales process scorecard before you buy anything, see what our consulting engagement covers, or take the founder prompt set and run the diagnosis yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional sales manager cost per month?

Between $3,000 and $10,000 a month in 2026, depending on days per month, seniority, and scope. STAOS engagements start at $5,000 a month with a three-month minimum.

Is a fractional sales manager cheaper than hiring?

Substantially. A full-time VP of sales costs roughly $318,000 in year one at the US median base once employer burden and recruiting are included, against $60,000 for a $5,000 a month fractional engagement.

What is the minimum engagement length?

Three months at STAOS. Anything shorter does not give a structural change time to hold, because the weekly rhythm is what makes it stick and that takes repetitions.

Does a fractional sales manager coach the reps directly?

At STAOS, yes. If live call coaching is not in the scope of an engagement you are considering, you are buying advice rather than an install, and the price should reflect that.

What is the difference between fractional and advisory pricing?

Fractional at $5,000 a month is hands-on: in the CRM, on the calls, running the weekly rhythm. Advisory at $8,000 a month works at the RevOps layer on systems and architecture, and suits agencies that already have a sales leader in the seat.
